Belize Climate Week 2026 launched in Toledo, promoting innovation and climate resilience

By Zoila Palma: The 5th National Climate Week officially got underway on Friday, August 21, 2026, with an opening ceremony at the Punta Gorda Sporting Complex in Punta Gorda Town.

The four-day event, organized by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management through the Climate Change Department, is being held under the theme, “Where Innovation Meets Impact: Driving Resilience, Scaling Technology, and Expanding Inclusion in Climate Action.”

Climate Week 2026 began with a community parade and will continue through Monday, August 24, featuring panel discussions, interactive activities and exhibition booths.

The initiative provides an opportunity for Belizeans to learn more about climate change, share ideas and explore practical solutions to help communities become more resilient.

Prime Minister John Briceño delivered the keynote address during the opening ceremony.

The event is also highlighting the evolution of Belize’s climate policy, including the Climate Change and Carbon Market Initiatives Act 2026, which is expected to play an important role in advancing the country’s climate agenda.

Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management Orlando Habet said the government is working to strengthen Belize’s legal and institutional framework while improving access to climate financing and technology.

“The government is putting the foundations in place, strengthening the legal framework, turning national commitments into investment priorities,” Habet said.

The decision to host Climate Week in Toledo is also intended to highlight the contributions of women, Indigenous peoples and youth to climate action and decision-making.

CEO Milagro Matus said Toledo provides an ideal setting for discussions on resilience, noting that “Climate action is now part of national development” and is connected to how Belize grows food, manages waste, protects forests and seas, builds communities and prepares for the future.
