By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man who pleaded guilty to stealing more than $2,400 worth of electronics and other items was fined just over $1,000 on Monday after an unsuccessful attempt to lead police to the stolen property.
Thirty-six-year-old Sherman Usher, a maintenance worker of King and West Streets, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with theft.
Usher admitted that on Friday, August 21, 2026, on Church Street, Belize City, he stole property belonging to a man valued at a combined $2,465.
The stolen items included a purple backpack valued at $100, a Nike backpack valued at $100, a Dell laptop computer valued at $2,000, a headset valued at $90 and a Bluetooth speaker valued at $175.
At his arraignment, Usher requested a sentencing indication. The Magistrate informed him that, since he had no previous conviction for theft, the court was considering a fine along with compensation rather than an immediate prison sentence.
Usher subsequently pleaded guilty.
He was fined $1,030 plus $5 cost of court and was given until October 31, 2026 to pay. If he defaults, he faces six months imprisonment.
Usher then told the court that he could return the stolen property. Police officers from Precinct 1 escorted him from the cellblock at around 3:20 p.m. to the location where he claimed the items were being kept.
The trip, however, proved unsuccessful and Usher returned to court empty-handed, with none of the stolen items recovered.
As a result, the court is expected to determine how much compensation Usher will be ordered to pay the complainant for the missing property.
Further details surrounding how the theft allegedly occurred were not immediately available.
