Belize City Council and Chief Sustainability Officer of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration discuss proposed Floating Boardwalk Project

By Zoila Palma: On August 12, 2026, the Belize City Council welcomed Manfred Kopper, Chief Sustainability Officer of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), along with representatives of the Ministry of Economic Transformation and technical partners, for a strategic engagement at City Hall.

Discussions focused on advancing the proposed Belize City Floating Boardwalk Project, including its technical next steps and potential support through the Adaptation Fund.

The initiative is envisioned as an innovative investment in coastal resilience, sustainable urban infrastructure and the continued development of Belize City’s waterfront.

The delegation conducted a walkthrough of the Southern Foreshore area, the proposed site for the project’s pilot phase. This provided an opportunity to assess the location firsthand and consider how the floating boardwalk concept could respond to the area’s unique coastal conditions.

The Belize City Council noted that as a vulnerable coastal city, the council understands that planning for the future must include infrastructure that responds to climate risks while creating lasting value for residents.
