ATHLETICS-Sports Minister lauds athletes’ performances at international meets.

HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC – Bermuda’s Minister of Sport, Owen Darrell, has praised the country’s athletes for their performances at this year’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games and Commonwealth Games.

The country secured seven medals across both meets, which Darrell said was an outstanding performance.

“I rise to update this Honorable House, and the people of Bermuda, on an outstanding summer of achievement by our national athletes on the international stage,” Darrell said while delivering a ministerial statement during Parliament recently,

“Over the course of a few short weeks, Team Bermuda competed at two of the most significant multi-sport events on the global calendar: the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Our athletes returned home with seven medals across the two Games, spanning swimming, sailing, triathlon and athletics. This is a result that speaks to the depth of talent on our island and to the dedication of the athletes, coaches, families and officials who make these achievements possible,” he added.

Darrell said while Bermuda only claimed one medal at the Commonwealth Games, it was a historic one, with Jessica Lewis capturing bronze in the women’s T54 400 meters to become Bermuda’s first-ever Commonwealth Games para-athletics medallist.

The minister also revealed that through the Department of Sport and Recreation’s Outstanding Athletic Performance Incentive Program, cash incentives were awarded to athletes who achieve medals at one of the five recognized festivals of sport: the Olympic Games, the Pan American Games, the Commonwealth Games, the CAC Games, and the World Championships.
