A government should be judged by its own record, the Opposition should be judged on the strength of its policies and credibility of its alternatives

By Joe Awe: A government should always be judged by its own record. That principle applies whether it is the PUP, the UDP, or any future administration.

However, this argument falls short because it ignores an important reality. Governments do not begin with a blank slate. They inherit debt, contracts, infrastructure projects, legal obligations, and long term economic challenges from previous administrations. It is reasonable to explain how those inherited issues affect current decisions. It is not reasonable to use them forever as an excuse.

At the same time, the opposition also has a responsibility to be honest. The UDP governed Belize from 2008 to 2020. During that period, the country faced its own controversies involving public spending, governance, and transparency. It is difficult to demand perfect accountability today while pretending those years never happened.

The real question is not who can point fingers better. The real question is who has credible solutions.

Belizeans deserve more than political blame games. They deserve leaders who accept responsibility, explain their decisions, provide evidence for their claims, and produce measurable results. If there are allegations of corruption or missing public funds, they should be backed by evidence and investigated by the proper authorities, regardless of which party is in government.

After six years in office, the government should be judged primarily on what it has achieved and where it has fallen short. Likewise, the opposition should be judged on the strength of its policies and the credibility of its alternatives, not simply on its criticism of those in power.

Belize will move forward when both parties spend less time reliving the past and more time proving they can build a better future.
