Zarah Castillo rises above the odds!

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize Port Authority has welcomed employee Zarah Castillo back to work, celebrating her return as a powerful example of resilience and determination.

Castillo, a wheelchair user, entrepreneur, legal clerk and advocate for persons with disabilities, has overcome significant challenges since an accident in September 2023 left her facing the prospect of paralysis from the waist down.

Castillo endured months of physical, emotional and mental struggles but refused to allow her circumstances to define her future.

Through faith, perseverance and the support of her loved ones, she rebuilt her life and gained a deeper appreciation for patience, gratitude and life’s small victories.

Most importantly, she said her disability does not limit her abilities or potential.

Her return to work marks more than a return to employment, representing independence, confidence and purpose.

Among her accomplishments since the accident are graduating with honors, launching her own business and resuming her professional career. Castillo also hopes to continue expanding her business and advocating for greater opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Reflecting on her journey, Castillo described herself as “resilient” and encouraged others facing difficult circumstances not to give up. She said it is important to take life one day at a time, celebrate even the smallest victories and believe that brighter days are ahead.

The Belize Port Authority said her story is a reminder that with faith and perseverance, even the toughest odds can be overcome.
