Your Had Me At Hello: Crazy in Love, Beyonce and Jay-Z Stay Strong Through Trials and Triumphs

Beyonce and Jay-Z are arguably one of America’s favorite celebrity power couples despite past rumors of infidelity and that infamous elevator scuffle between Jay and Bey’s sister Solange. But as Beyoncé sang in Part II (On the Run), “Who wants that perfect love story anyway?”

Though not perfect, their relationship of more than 20 years has proven to be resilient.

Friends First

According to an interview with Seventeen magazine, Beyoncé and Jay-Z met when Bey, who is 12 years younger than her husband, was 18. But they didn’t start dating until about a year and a half later, when Beyoncé was 19.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Bey shared that she and Jay got to know each other through frequent phone calls before they started dating.

“We were on the phone for a year and a half, and that foundation is so important for a relationship,” she said.

Their first official date was at the celeb-favorite restaurant Nobu, but the two kept their relationship under wraps.

Constant Collaborators

Even before they went public with their relationship, Beyoncé and Jay-Z proved they had hit-making chemistry. In 2002, they collaborated on Jay-Z’s track “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” and in 2003 Beyoncé released the song “Crazy in Love” featuring Jay-Z — which they won a Grammy for Best R&B Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2004.

Finally, that same year, Beyoncé and Jay-Z made their red carpet debut at the MTV VMAs in Miami — and they each won awards.

Through the years, the couple would continue to collaborate on several projects – such as Beyoncé’s B’Day album (Jay-Z appears on “Déjà Vu” and “Upgrade U”) and Jay-Z’s Kingdom Come, which features Beyoncé on the track titled “Hollywood.”

A Secret Wedding

Beyoncé and Jay-Z married on April 4, 2008, during a secretive and intimate ceremony held at Jay-Z’s Manhattan penthouse.

A source told People magazine at the time that the apartment was decorated with 70,000 dendrobium orchids flown in from Thailand.

Later that year, the couple showed off their matching tattoos of the Roman numeral IV on their ring fingers. The number is significant because Beyoncé was born on September 4; Jay-Z on December 4; and they were married on April 4.

The couple continued to attend noteworthy events side-by-side, including the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama for his first term. Beyoncé sang “America the Beautiful” at his swearing-in ceremony and later serenaded Barack and Michelle Obama with Etta James’ “At Last” as the Obamas shared their first dance at his inaugural ball.

The Big Reveal

Despite their secretive wedding, the couple chose to share that they were expecting in a big way.

At the MTV VMAs in August of 2011 in Los Angeles, Beyoncé wore an outfit revealing her baby bump. When she took to the stage to perform “Love on Top,” she told the audience, “I want you to stand up on your feet. I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside me.”

In her 2013, HBO documentary Life Is But a Dream, Beyoncé revealed that Blue Ivy was not her first pregnancy, and she shared the heartbreaking story of her miscarriage.

Blue Ivy Carter was born on January 7, 2012, in New York City. The following month, the couple shared the first public photos of their baby girl.

After creating a life together, the couple continued to create music together too, collaborating on projects such as Jay’s Magna Carta Holy Grail, which includes his duet with his wife, “Part II (On the Run),” and Beyoncé’s groundbreaking self-titled album, which included the hit “Drunk in Love” with Jay-Z.

Family Feud

In May 2014, just months after the couple performed “Drunk in Love” together at the Grammys, footage of Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and her sister Solange in an elevator after the annual Met Gala began to circulate, showing Solange attacking Jay-Z after an argument. While no one from the family has ever confirmed the cause of the disagreement,  tabloids reported it was over cheating rumors.

“They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family,” the family said in a released statement. “At the end of the day families have problems and we’re no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same.”

That drama didn’t keep Bey and Jay from launching their On the Run Tour, which ran for 21 dates. Despite the tour’s success, rumors of divorce continued.

On August 24, Beyoncé received the MTV Video Vanguard Award, which was presented to her by Jay and their daughter Blue Ivy.

Making Lemonade

In April 2016, Beyoncé released her Lemonade album alongside her HBO special of visuals. With several songs about infidelity, the album seemed to be about troubles in Bey and Jay’s marriage. But it was also about a journey to forgiveness.

In June of 2017, Beyoncé and Jay-Z welcomed their twins Rumi and Sir. Later on, Jay-Z released his 13th solo studio album, 4:44, in which he raps about his relationships.

A few months later, in an interview with The New York Times Style Magazine, Jay-Z admitted to infidelity but also explained how he and Beyoncé repaired their relationship, in part through their music.

“We were using our art almost like a therapy session,” he said.

Jay shared that he believes most people walk away from relationships in tough times because they can’t face themselves.

“The hardest thing is seeing pain on someone’s face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself. So, you know, most people don’t want to do that. You don’t want to look inside yourself. And so you walk away,” he said.

Everything Is Love

But Bey and Jay did not walk away. And they’ve continued to create music together, tour together, and support each other in their endeavors.

When Beyoncé headlined Coachella, Jay-Z popped up for a duet both weekends.

In June of 2018, they launched their On the Run II Tour, which featured footage from a vow renewal ceremony.

That same month, they released their shared album, Everything Is Love, which won best urban contemporary album at the 2019 Grammy Awards.

Jay-Z supported Beyoncé throughout her Renaissance and Cowboy Carter world tours. Bey celebrated the opening of Jay-Z’s The Book of HOV exhibition at the Brooklyn Public Library.

In February of 2024, Bey and Jay attended the Grammys, where Jay accepted the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. But Jay had something to say to the Recording Academy that, at the time, had never awarded his wife Album of the Year.

“I don’t want to embarrass this young lady [Beyoncé], but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year,” he said on stage. “So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that: the most Grammys, never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work.”

A few days later, Beyoncé nearly broke the internet with the announcement of Renaissance Act II and the release of two country songs.

In March, Beyoncé dropped her Act II album, Cowboy Carter.

In November 2024, Beyoncé received 11 Grammy nominations for Cowboy Carter, which brought her lifetime total to 99, the highest of any artist. (She and Jay-Z had previously been tied at 88.)

And in February of 2025, Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter not only won Country Album of the Year, but Queen Bey finally took home Album of the Year too.

Despite the trials they have faced, Beyoncé and Jay-Z keep winning – together.
