“What matters now is unity”: Miller following convention victory

By Zoila Palma:  Eliude Miller has emerged as the People’s United Party’s (PUP) mayoral candidate for Belize City after winning the party’s mayoral convention on Sunday, August 30.

Miller’s victory puts him at the forefront of the PUP’s campaign to retain control of Belize City, as he prepares for the upcoming municipal elections.

Following the convention, Miller thanked supporters and delegates for their confidence, describing the campaign as one of the most difficult challenges he has faced. “This has been one of the hardest things I have ever done,” Miller said.

He added, “My focus remained on service, on the people, and on giving our delegates the respect I believe they deserved.”

Miller expressed gratitude to the delegates who welcomed him into their homes and communities and said he understood the responsibility that comes with their trust.

“I intend to honour it through continued service, hard work and leadership that brings people together,” he said.

He also thanked his campaign team, family, friends, party supporters, area representatives, chairpersons and the PUP Secretariat, emphasizing that “This success does not belong to me alone.”

Miller also extended a message of respect to fellow candidate Allan Pollard, acknowledging their work together at the Belize City Council.

“I have always maintained that politics should never become personal,” Miller said.

“Our ultimate responsibility must remain bigger than any one of us: to serve the people,” he added.

With the convention now concluded, Miller said his attention has shifted toward uniting the party and working for Belize City. He described himself as “a collaborator and a unifier” and said he wants to work with everyone genuinely committed to the city’s success.

Looking ahead, Miller said, “Winning a convention cannot be the destination,” adding that his goal is to turn the campaign’s success into progress for Belize City.

He closed with a rallying message: “The work continues. Let’s Do It Fi Di City.”
