Several protesters and political leaders, including Aam Aadmi Party’s Saurabh Bharadwaj and Atishi, and Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Manoj Kumar Jha, were detained near Jantar Mantar in Delhi ahead of a proposed demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

All India Students’ Association chief Neha Bora was also detained by the Delhi Police, The Hindu reported.

Internet services were suspended in areas around the Jantar Mantar, while the main protest area was barricaded, The Hindu reported.

The protesters are demanding action against Kumar and have raised concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.

Protesters detained

  • Around 100 to 150 protesters were stopped by the police before they could reach Jantar Mantar, Newslaundry reported.
  • The police said that orders prohibiting a gathering of five or more persons under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita remain in force in the New Delhi district.
  • On Friday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma said that “permission has not been granted for any type of protest”, PTI reported.
