In India, small AI is making farming advice faster, simpler, and more accessible for smallholder farmers using basic smartphones.

Farmers can now get practical guidance in local languages on crops, pests, weather, markets, and government support.

With World Bank Group support, digital agriculture tools are helping improve farm productivity, strengthen resilience, and create new job opportunities.

For millions of smallholder farmers in India, expert advice was hard to reach. 

Now a small AI is closing that gap — targeted tools built for basic phones, local languages, and low-connectivity fields.

The tools advise on sowing, diagnose disease from a photograph, and navigate government programs.

Pilots are showing yields up 20 to 30 percent

On farms across India, a quiet digital revolution is taking root – one that is helping farmers make smarter decisions, protect crops, increase productivity and create jobs using nothing more than a basic smartphone.

For many farmers, artificial intelligence is no longer a distant or futuristic technology.

It is becoming a practical, everyday tool.

“Earlier, I had to depend on someone else whenever I saw a problem in my crop. Now I can take a picture and get advice immediately,” said Urmila Devi, in Bhanpur village, Uttar Pradesh.

These are not the massive, high-powered AI systems. Instead, farmers are benefiting from “small AI” – affordable, accessible tools built to solve specific problems in local communities.

They are designed to work on basic smartphones and in areas with limited internet connectivity.

These applications deliver timely, localized advice helping farmers decide when to sow, manage pests, or apply for government support.

“The biggest benefit is that advice is available when I need it. I can ask about my crop in my own language, and the answers are easy for me to understand,” said Shanti Devi.

The World Bank Group is supporting these new innovations as part of its AgriConnect initiative, which aims to transform farming for 300 million smallholders, creating jobs, and strengthening global food security.

Kerala’s AI-powered advice for better farming

For a small farmer in Kerala, a coastal state in southern India, a few days of unexpected rain or the sudden spread of pests can mean the difference between profit and loss.

With incomes tied closely to weather and crop conditions, quick decisions matter – but reliable information is not always easy to access.

That is beginning to change through KATHIR – the Kerala Agriculture Technology Hub and Information Repository – a digital agriculture platform being developed by the state government with support from the World Bank Group.

Once KATHIR is fully rolled out, it employs satellite imagery, remote sensing, and AI-powered analytics, to help farmers access localized weather alerts, sowing advice, and crop disease detection tools directly on their phones.

Farmers can upload photos of damaged crops to receive AI-supported guidance on potential diseases and treatments. The platform also helps connect farmers to government support and agriculture markets.

KATHIR works on two levels. For farmers, it provides practical, AI-powered advice on when to sow, irrigate, harvest, and manage crops. For the government, it uses tools such as satellite imagery and AI to map crops, identify farmers, count coconut trees, estimate yields, and better target support.

KATHIR already includes data on more than 3 million farmers and maps over 1.1 million hectares of crops, giving officials a clearer understanding of agricultural conditions across the state and helping improve the delivery of subsidies, disaster response, and other support programs, including strengthened market linkages by giving farmers timely access to demand signals and buyer connections.

A new generative AI-based farming assistant is expanding these services further, offering guidance on irrigation, fertilizer use, and pest management in local languages.

Designed to work in real-world conditions – including areas with limited connectivity – tools like KATHIR show how practical, accessible AI can help farming communities become more productive and resilient.

AI farm advisor in the pockets of farmers in Maharashtra

Meanwhile, in the western state of Maharashtra, the challenges that many small farmers face are not just extreme weather or pest but also finding reliable advice as soon as something goes wrong in their fields.

Information is spread across many offices and websites and may not be available in local languages.

To meet this need, an initiative called MahaVISTAAR-AI is introduced, which shows how small Artificial Intelligence can support farmers in a different way. Launched under the state’s MahaAgri-AI policy, MahaVISTAAR is a chatbot powered by generative AI.

Farmers can ask questions by voice or text on their phones in their own language.

The Korea World Bank Partnership Facility has helped strengthen the chatbot’s reasoning with just-in-time AI inputs by facilitating access to high-caliber AI and machine learning specialists to fine-tune the platform’s core algorithm.

Many farmers can now simply pull out their phones and ask questions in their own language, which includes the different local dialects spoken in the region.

MahaVISTAAR listens to the question, translates it if needed, and searches trusted sources like research institutes and India’s Department of Agriculture.

It then sends back a short, clear answer tailored to the farmer’s village or district, and shows where the information comes from so farmers know they can trust it.

The chatbot covers everyday questions about pests and diseases, what prices to expect in the market, and local weather conditions.

In just a few months, it was downloaded more than 3 million times –proof that farmers and frontline staff are eager for fast, reliable advice in the palms of their hands.

Moving from advice to action

Both tools are now doing more than just giving advice.

In Maharashtra, the next step is to let MahaVISTAAR act like an assistant that can help farmers with tasks such as filling in forms for direct benefit transfers.

KATHIR’s verified farm data is also helping banks, cooperatives, and agribusinesses design better financial products and make it easier for farmers to get loans.

As these AI initiatives across India scale, they will not only help farmers grow food but also bring new job opportunities.

Government investments in digital infrastructure, clear rules for AI, and support for local innovators can turn these tools into engines for jobs in data, advisory services, and agri-tech.

“We are trying to encourage digital startups and ag-tech specific product creation.

The ecosystem will then be available for them to create new jobs, new products,” said Rajya Shree Singh, Digital Development Expert with the government of Uttar Pradesh.

In India’s fields, information is becoming as important as seeds and water.

Small AI is helping make sure that information reaches farmers in a form they can use: simple, timely, and tailored to their needs.
