The independence anniversary celebrations marking our sixty years as an independent state are now behind us. Understandably, it was a low-key but beautiful affair. The people were in a very celebratory mood, which was good to see. Many wore the national colours of blue, black, and white. We also had ordinary people from other nations join in the festivities, which is always good to see.
Now, where do we go from here? I think we have made a good start by not declaring October 2nd a public holiday. So, hats off to the President of the country for not being swayed by emotional pressure from other quarters, especially public sector workers, to have a holiday. The holiday would have brought unnecessary costs, especially to the private sector as the engine of economic growth and job creation. It is good that we are learning from the advanced economies, that they do celebrate their national days but then quickly get back to work.
