Joy-Lance Mickels made history as the first Rwandan to play in the UEFA Champions League proper on Thursday night.
The forward, featuring for the Azerbaijan Sabah FK side against Manchester United at Old Trafford was a menace to the United defence although his side ended up losing 4-0 on the night.
The childhood Manchester United fan described the feeling as special
“It was a special feeling for me,” Mickels said after the match.
“I have supported Manchester United since I was a child, so to play against them at Old Trafford in the Champions League is something I will never forget. It is a dream come true, even though the result was disappointing.”
Mickels, 32 made his Amavubi debut in March this year and played a crucial role as Sabah FK, formed nine years ago reached the group stages of Europe’s premium club competition for the first time with nine goals.
From the Cecafa region, Mickels joins Kenyans McDonald Mariga and Victor Wanyama and Tanzania’s Novatus Miroshi as players to have played in the Champions League proper – only Mariga won it with Inter Milan.
