Ras Teo stays rooted with ‘The 40 Children’

First released on vinyl earlier this year on A-Lone Productions’ new Aaron & Moses label, the 12-track album is now also available on streaming platforms through Geneva-based Evidence Music.

With The 40 Children, singer Ras Teo delivers a serious roots reggae statement built on strong foundations. The northern Los Angeles-based singer explores the musical and historical connections between Ethiopians and Armenians, with an accompanying booklet that gives more context to the story behind the album.

Roberto Sánchez gives The 40 Children the warm, organic sound you’d expect from the Santander-based producer. Working with an analogue approach, he keeps the music natural and unforced. The bass runs deep, the drums roll steadily underneath, and the arrangements leave plenty of room for the musicians and vocals to shine.

There’s plenty happening around that solid riddim foundation. Rich horn arrangements, carefully blended harmonies and atmospheric flute solos give the tracks a spiritual, sometimes almost meditative quality. Ras Teo’s lyrics remain at the centre, carrying conscious themes without turning the music into a lecture.

And that’s one of the album’s strengths. The 40 Children has something to say, but it also sounds good while saying it. This is roots reggae with a clear sense of identity, culture and purpose, backed by production that respects the music’s foundations. A worthwhile listen for roots heads looking beyond the surface.
