PUP heads into major Belize City convention showdown on Sunday

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The People’s United Party holds its Belize City municipal convention on Sunday at the ITVET compound on Freetown Road, with hundreds of delegates expected.

The convention will determine the party’s mayoral candidate and ten councillor candidates for the city.

PUP Chairman Henry Charles Usher says turnout at municipal conventions has been strong across the country.

“At this municipal convention for Belize City is bigger than the UDP’s national convention,” Usher said. “That is how broad-based and participatory this particular process is.”

Usher also explained how delegate numbers were set for Fort George and Pickstock, two divisions that recorded endorsements rather than contested conventions ahead of the last general election.

He said some argued those constituencies should get 100 percent, while others said they should get none. Neither was considered fair.

“A decision was made to say alright let us look at the voter turnout in the election and the margin of victory that was suspected or projected in these two constituencies,” he said, adding that the formula may have produced a lower figure than warranted given high turnout in both areas.
