By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 51-year-old Belize City man has been fined $205 after pleading guilty to possession of 0.2 grams of crack cocaine.
Elroy Mark Bonnell, a labourer of Castle Street, appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with possession of a controlled drug.
Bonnell pleaded guilty and told the court in mitigation that he did not intend to waste the court’s time.
“I got caught with the drugs. I plea guilty. Am asking for a fine,” he told the court.
The Magistrate fined Bonnell $200, along with $5 in court costs. He was given until September 30, 2026, to pay, or in default, serve one month in prison.
The charge stems from an incident on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
Police say officers were conducting motorcycle patrol on Cleghorn Street when they noticed Bonnell riding contrary to traffic with a grey shirt wrapped around his head.
Officers stopped him and informed him that a search would be conducted. Police allege that when an officer removed the shirt from Bonnell’s head, a small cream-colored substance suspected to be crack cocaine fell from the shirt to the ground near his feet.
The substance was later weighed at 0.2 grams.
