Police shake-up: Aaron Gamboa removed from SPU command

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Assistant Superintendent of Police Aaron Gamboa has been relieved of command of the Special Patrol Unit with immediate effect, ending a run of nearly ten years at the head of the unit.

Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado confirmed the transfer, saying Gamboa moves to the National Operations Office to support oversight and coordination of national police operations.

Neville Martinez has been appointed interim commander of the SPU and is expected to hold the position until a substantive commander is named.

Under Gamboa, the SPU expanded its national reach and became the unit routinely deployed to crime hotspots and communities seeing sudden flare ups in violence.

The reassignment appears to be part of wider changes underway at the Belize Police Department.

Prime Minister John Briceño said he was not aware of this specific move.

“Minister Espat has been doing a number of changes. He has been shaking up the police department and we need to do some of that,” Briceño said. “We just can’t be business as usual.”

He added that Espat had told him changes were coming but had not named individuals.
