Muhoozi appoints Gen Ssemwanga Reserve Forces commander

Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has appointed Maj Gen Joseph Ssemwanga as the General Officer Commanding the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Reserve Forces.

Ssemwanga, who has been serving as Deputy Commander of the Land Forces, replaces Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany, who is due to retire next week.

The appointment is part of a wider reshuffle in the UPDF that comes amid the retirement of 1,817 personnel, including 19 general officers, 229 senior officers, 205 junior officers and 1,364 militants.

Col Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, said Maj Gen Felix Busizoori, the commander of the 4 Infantry Division, has been appointed Deputy Commander of the Land Forces.

Maj Gen Wilberforce Sserunkuma, the commander of the 3 Infantry Division, has been appointed commander of the 4 Infantry Division.

“The Deputy 1 Infantry Division Commander Brig Gen Michael Hyeroba is appointed the 3 Infantry Division Commander,” Magezi said.

Magezi said the transfers and appointments take immediate effect.

The changes come as the UPDF undertakes a major retirement exercise involving officers and other personnel who have reached the mandatory retirement age or completed their service terms.

The retirement of the 1,817 personnel is expected to pave the way for further changes in the command structure of the army.
