Ministry of Agriculture targets higher production and expanded markets

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Ministry of Agriculture is hosting its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Dangriga, bringing together technical officers and industry stakeholders to review Belize’s agricultural sector, assess ongoing programmes and identify priorities for the year ahead.

Chief Executive Officer Servulo Baeza presented an overview of the sector’s performance, highlighting developments across key industries and production areas.

Discussions focused on improving agricultural productivity, strengthening support for farmers, enhancing national food security, expanding market access and building greater resilience to climate and economic challenges.

Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson said agriculture currently contributes approximately 15 percent of Belize’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He expressed optimism that increased production, investment and expanded market opportunities could further increase the sector’s contribution to the national economy.

Ferguson also acknowledged the financial challenges facing the Government, particularly the growing demand from farmers for assistance with production costs and climate-related losses.

He said balancing requests for subsidies and other support with limited public resources remains a significant challenge as the Government works to strengthen Belize’s agricultural sector.
