By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 28-year-old Seine Bight man has been arrested and charged with attempt theft after a Canadian businessman reported that someone tried to take his gold chain at a restaurant.
Police said Bryan Newton, 46, a Canadian national and businessman from the Maya Beach area, reported that on Saturday, August 22, at approximately 8:30 p.m., he went to Me N U restaurant in Seine Bight Village to purchase food.
While waiting, Newton said he stepped outside to smoke and was approached by an unknown man who asked him for a cigarette.
Newton reported that after returning inside the restaurant, he noticed the same man standing close to him.
He alleged that the man suddenly grabbed his gold chain, which was worn around his neck. Newton said he grabbed the man’s wrist and managed to prevent the chain from being taken.
Police said surveillance footage from the restaurant was viewed and the suspect was identified as Akeem Joseph, 28, of Seine Bight Village.
Joseph was detained and formally arrested and charged with attempt theft.
