By Zoila Palma: Mexico and Peru will reestablish diplomatic relations following an agreement described by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as an act of “good will” by the Peruvian government.
Sheinbaum said the decision followed Peru’s granting of safe passage to Chávez, which she described as a gesture toward Mexico.
“With this [act of good will], relations with Peru are going to be reestablished,” Sheinbaum said during her Friday morning press conference, Mexico News daily reported.
Sheinbaum also reiterated Mexico’s support for former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo, whose 2022 removal from office she has previously described as a “coup.” She said Peru’s new government is aware that Mexico will continue defending Castillo.
