International News: Mexico and U.S. seek to restore security cooperation despite visa dispute

By Zoila Palma:  Mexico and the United States are working to maintain and strengthen security cooperation despite a growing diplomatic dispute over the revoked U.S. visa of Andy López Beltrán, son of former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson announced a new agreement allowing Mexico access to the U.S. market for drone procurement, while Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch is set to attend a major U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) conference in Argentina.

The visa dispute escalated after López Beltrán accused the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump of revoking his entry permit for political reasons.

He denied any wrongdoing and described the decision as politically motivated. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has defended López Beltrán, saying there is no evidence against him, while members of the ruling Morena party have rallied behind the former president’s son and described the U.S. action as interference in Mexico’s sovereignty.

Despite the tensions, officials on both sides continue to emphasize cooperation on security matters.

U.S. officials have highlighted joint efforts, while the U.S. Embassy in Mexico stated that visas can be cancelled when there are reasons to do so, regardless of the holder’s political views. The embassy also highlighted a photograph of Johnson and García Harfuch, saying the two countries are delivering results on priority issues under the leadership of Trump and Sheinbaum.

García Harfuch’s decision to attend the International Conference on Drug Control in Argentina is being viewed as another sign that both governments are seeking to keep security cooperation moving forward.
