By Zoila Palma: Mexican authorities have arrested a suspected leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) who is allegedly connected to the killings of social media influencer Valeria Márquez and former Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo.
Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known as “El R-1,” was arrested this week and is accused of leading “Los Rs,” a violent criminal cell operating in parts of Michoacán and Jalisco, ABC reports.
Mexico’s Public Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said Álvarez Ayala is believed to have ordered and financed the November 2025 assassination of Manzo, whose killing during Day of the Dead celebrations shocked the country.
Authorities say investigators used forensic evidence, telephone records, financial transfers, witness interviews and court-authorized wiretaps to build the case against the alleged cartel leader.
Authorities have also linked Álvarez Ayala’s criminal cell to the May 2025 killing of Márquez, a 23-year-old TikTok influencer who was shot while livestreaming from her beauty salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. García Harfuch said investigators believe Márquez’s former boyfriend, identified as Álvarez Ayala’s son, Francisco, had a romantic relationship with her, allegedly threatened her and may have asked his father to arrange her killing. The son remains at large and is being sought by authorities.
The secretary stressed that the investigations into Márquez’s killing and Manzo’s assassination are separate, but said Álvarez Ayala’s arrest has provided investigators with new leads and evidence.
Investigators also believe individuals close to Manzo may have provided the cartel with information that helped facilitate the assassination.
