This has been a great summer so far. We have had a few real rainy months and some with hardly any rain at all. There have been some hot days with the nineties several times so far with lots of summer to go. I like to talk about safety when we are carefree and having lots of fun. Sometimes we tend to let our guard down when things are really going well. So, let us review some safety tips and things to look out for. I will mention being aware of your surroundings a few times during this discussion. When you are out walking, be aware of your surroundings. Walk with purpose like you know where you are going. It is not a clever idea to have headphones on, so you do not hear what is going on around you. Criminals pick out targets and look for people who do not seem sure of themselves or where they are going.
When you are driving and out in traffic keep good spacing between your vehicle and the car in front of you. Do not stop too close to the vehicle in front of you at traffic lights and stop signs. Always give yourself enough room to be able to turn quickly in get out of your location if needed. You do not want to get boxed in with nowhere to go. Road rage can happen very quickly with some people carrying weapons. If someone is following you go to a well-lighted location if possible. A police station is another option if you are close to one. Get to the location and blow your horn very loud to draw attention. Also, when you park at night try to pick a location that is well lite as close to your home as possible. People, especially women, should carry something like pepper spray as a defensive weapon. Interlace your keys between your fingers and strike out towards a suspect’s face if attacked.
People sometimes let their guard down around their home. If you are out working in front of your home, make sure the rear doors are locked. Some criminals look for these opportunities to go into unlocked doors and steal from homes. Sometimes these criminals work in teams to commit crimes. One person will come up and talk with you while another is trying to get into your home. Just be aware and watch out. Also keep your bushes and trees trimmed so they do not cover up windows by your home. Criminals always look at night not to be seen or have cover to commit their crimes. Be aware that sometimes they push in window air conditioners to get inside of your home. You can put a stick or rod, so the window only goes up a certain distance to maintain safety. The Ring Doorbell systems and alarms are also extremely helpful.
So again, hopefully everyone is having a great, fun summer. But remember the safety of you and your family should be foremost in your mind.
