By Zoila Palma: Today, Dr. John Walden, Assistant Professor at Galen University presented on the 2026 BAS Ancient Maya Kinship Project, an international collaboration between Harvard University, the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, the Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance (BVAR) Project, the Actuncan Project, the Belize Valley Archaeological Project, and Galen University.
Dr. Walden’s presentation is part of the Belize Archaeological Symposium 2026.
Drawing on genome-wide ancient DNA from more than 300 ancient Maya individuals, the project is transforming understanding of kinship, households, and political organization in the Upper Belize River Valley.
The presentation also highlighted Galen University’s contributions to archaeological research, student training, curation, and community outreach in Belize.
Dr. Walden will also present at Galen University on Tuesday, July 14, at 5:30 p.m.
