By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 62-year-old San Pedro Columbia Village farmer who was found lying on the stairs near a village bar, and who twice refused to leave the area, has been formally charged with loitering in a public place and is due before the Punta Gorda Magistrate Court on Friday.
According to the Belize Police Department, on Monday, August 3, 2026, at about 10:00 p.m., an officer conducting motorcycle patrol within San Pedro Columbia Village made checks at a village bar and observed a man lying face up on stairs about ten feet from the establishment.
The officer woke the man and asked him to leave the area, noting a strong aroma of alcohol as he spoke, and warned him for loitering. After making further checks at the bar, the officer returned about ten minutes later to find the same man in the same location.
Asked to leave a second time, the man refused, declaring that he was not going anywhere, that he was doing nothing, and that he was not afraid of any police. He was informed he was under arrest for the offence of loitering, cautioned, informed of his rights, and escorted with the assistance of other officers to the Punta Gorda Police Station. Due to his level of intoxication, his name could not be obtained that night, nor could he be issued an acknowledgement form.
The formalities waited for sobriety. On Tuesday, August 4, the officer found the man in a sober state of mind at the station’s detention center, where he was identified through his voter identification card as George Domingo Maquin, a 62-year-old farmer of San Pedro Columbia Village. His rights in custody were then read, explained, and issued in an acknowledgement form, which he signed.
That same date, police formally arrested and charged Maquin with loitering in a public place. The charge was read to him, he confirmed he understood, and upon being cautioned once more, he chose to remain silent.
Maquin was granted police bail and is to appear at the Punta Gorda Magistrate Court on Friday, August 7, 2026.
