Ethiopia’s coffee exports have hit a milestone, reaching the $3 billion mark for the first time in the country’s history.

  • Ethiopia's coffee exports have reached a historic milestone of $3 billion for the first time.
  • This achievement is due to coordinated efforts across the coffee value chain, including farmers, exporters, cooperatives, investors, and government support.
  • Coffee export revenues have shown steady growth, rising from $1.4 billion in 2023 to $3 billion in the current fiscal year.
  • The government has contributed to this growth by focusing on local processing, quality control, traceability, and certification to meet global demand for premium coffee.

The information was revealed by the Ethiopian Minister of Agriculture, Addisu Arega, who noted that the breakthrough is a result of the combined efforts of farmers, exporters, cooperatives, investors, and government institutions working across the coffee value chain.

"It is accomplished! Ethiopia has successfully achieved its target of generating three billion USD from coffee exports this budget year. Congratulations to all!”

This milestone highlights the country’s rapid transformation of one of its most crucial industries, with earnings reaching unprecedented levels after several years of sustained growth.

Ethiopia’s coffee export revenue has been on an upward trend for a few years now, going from $1.4 billion in 2023 to $1.43 billion in 2024.

This growth continued last year when export earnings jumped to $2.65 billion, before climbing to a record $3 billion during the current fiscal year.

In February, it was reported that coffee exports, alongside textiles and flowers, constituted a significant portion of the $435 million trade between Russia and Ethiopia in 2025.

According to the Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terekhin, Ethiopia’s coffee exports to Russia rose from about $46 million in 2024 to an inflation-adjusted $123 million in 2025.

Import volumes more than doubled over the same period, climbing from 8,300 tonnes to approximately 18,300 tonnes.

The country’s current administration contributed to the growth of the coffee trade by prioritizing local coffee processing to capture greater value before export.

Alongside this, investments in quality control systems, product traceability, and certification have helped position Ethiopian coffee to meet rising international demand for premium, sustainably sourced products.

As seen on Ena, Ethiopia has a distinct edge in the international market since it is the origin of Arabica coffee.

Its wide genetic diversity of coffee plants and long-standing reputation for producing distinctive, high-quality beans continue to draw specialty coffee buyers from throughout the world, cementing the country's place as a key supplier.

As mentioned earlier, Ethiopia's long-term coffee strategy now includes sustainability as a crucial element.

To boost biodiversity, rehabilitate damaged landscapes, and increase the resilience of coffee-growing regions against the impacts of climate change, the nation has planted millions of coffee seedlings alongside native tree species under the Green Legacy Initiative.
