Council of Churches calls for modesty at Carnival, echoing concerns raised in recent BBN op-ed

By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Belize Council of Churches has called for greater modesty and clearer standards at Carnival, raising concerns over what it describes as increasingly immodest attire and conduct displayed by some participants during festivities in recent years.

In a media statement, the Council acknowledged Carnival as a cherished part of Belizean culture and a celebration of national identity, creativity and community, stressing that it does not seek to diminish the tradition, artistry, music or craftsmanship associated with the event.

However, the churches argued that celebration and public decency do not have to be mutually exclusive.

“Modesty in dress is not opposed to festivity; it is a reflection of self-respect and respect for the wider community that shares these public spaces,” the Council stated.

The organization called on Carnival organizers to establish and enforce clearer costume guidelines, particularly where minors are involved. It also urged parents and guardians to exercise discretion over their children’s participation and exposure to certain aspects of the celebrations, while asking participants to consider whether Carnival can remain vibrant and expressive while still reflecting standards of decency and virtue.

The statement comes shortly after a Breaking Belize News op-ed titled “Was Granny a ‘Hot Gial’? Today’s Carnival is nothing like the original road march” raised many of the same questions about the evolution of Carnival from its earlier family and community-oriented roots to the increasingly revealing costumes and sexually suggestive dancing commonly seen today.

That commentary triggered significant discussion among BBN readers, with a strong wave of support in the comments. Numerous readers argued that modern Carnival has become too explicit for children and questioned whether it can still comfortably be promoted as a family event. Others defended today’s Carnival culture, saying adults should be free to participate as they choose and that parents uncomfortable with what is displayed should decide whether to bring their children.

The Council said it remains willing to engage with government agencies, cultural institutions and Carnival organizers to find a balance that preserves the spirit of the celebration while upholding what it considers the moral standards of Belizean society.

“We invite dialogue, not division, on this matter,” the statement concluded.
