Black Sherif Turns Inward on New EP ‘Sun Sherif’

Ghanaian breakout star Black Sherif is letting listeners see a more personal side of his artistry with ‘Sun Sherif’, a six-track EP that explores solitude, reflection, creativity and the everyday moments behind the artist the world knows.

There is something deliberately intimate about the world Black Sherif creates on the project. Born from the bedroom, a space associated with privacy, quiet thoughts and creativity, ‘Sun Sherif’ feels like an invitation into moments that usually remain away from the public eye.

Across the six tracks, Black Sherif moves through the different rhythms of his personal world. Early morning thoughts, late-night reflections, and music created away from the spotlight all become part of the story, giving the EP an unusually open and unguarded quality.

Black Sherif first gave audiences a glimpse of ‘Sun Sherif’ during an exclusive listening session in London in August. At the time, he described the project as “more than an EP,” positioning it as an open door into his private space and the sounds, thoughts and ordinary moments that shape his life.

That description becomes particularly fitting when considering how far his journey has taken him. Black Sherif first began making waves in Ghana with early releases such as ‘Money’ and ‘Destiny’ in 2020 before the Sermon freestyle series helped establish the foundation for his international breakthrough.

His career changed dramatically with ‘Kwaku the Traveller’, which became a global success and earned the distinction of being the world’s most Shazam’d song while generating more than one million TikTok creations. The record transformed Black Sherif from a rising Ghanaian voice into an artist with a growing audience far beyond the country’s borders.

Since then, he has continued expanding his musical world through collaborations with artists including Burna Boy, Vic Mensa and Darkoo. His IRONBOY album further strengthened his position, earning acclaim and leading to an iconic COLORS performance of ‘One’.

The IRONBOY era also took him on tour across the United States and Europe, eventually culminating in two sold-out shows at Shepherds Bush Empire. His growing impact has continued to receive recognition, including eight nominations at this year’s Ghana Music Awards and a previous nomination for Best International Flow at the 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards.

Against that backdrop, ‘Sun Sherif’ feels like a different kind of statement. After years of growing into an international star, Black Sherif is turning towards the quieter spaces that helped shape him in the first place.

The bedroom becomes more than a physical setting within the concept. It represents the place where thoughts can unfold without an audience, where ideas can be tested and where music can exist before it is introduced to the world. That private foundation gives the EP its reflective character.
