By Zoila Palma: The cost of several popular beef and chicken products increased over the past year, with ground beef recording one of the largest price hikes, according to price data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
The figures show consumers are paying more for a range of meat products compared with the same period last year.
Ground beef recorded an 11.8 percent increase, with the average price for one pound rising from $7.59 to $8.49. Beef steak also became more expensive, increasing by 4.0 percent from $10.65 to $11.08 per pound, while stew pork rose by 3.8 percent, from $8.39 to $8.71 per pound.
Chicken prices also moved higher across several cuts.
The average price of whole chicken increased by 5.5 percent, from $3.23 to $3.40 per pound. Chicken cuts rose by 7.7 percent, from $3.68 to $3.97, while chicken legs increased by 7.3 percent, from $3.66 to $3.93 per pound.
Chicken breast recorded a 7.7 percent increase, climbing from $4.76 to $5.12 per pound, while chicken wings posted a smaller 1.6 percent increase, from $7.02 to $7.13.
