Ancient Maya still shape Belize’s rainforest thousands of years later

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): New research suggests that parts of Belize’s old growth rainforest still carry the imprint of how the ancient Maya used the land thousands of years ago.

According to a report from Phys.org, researchers examined LiDAR scans in Belize and found that even forests appearing largely undisturbed today show signs of ancient Maya land use in measures such as canopy height and leaf density.

Archaeologists compared the shape of the living forest with Maya remains concealed below the trees, linking present day forest patterns to older features including buildings and canals.

LiDAR uses laser pulses to map landscapes and vegetation, allowing researchers to examine what is happening above and below ground at the same time.

The findings challenge the idea that mature tropical forest is always a purely natural system with no lasting human fingerprint.

The research also has practical implications. Canopy height and leaf density are tied to shade, moisture, habitat and overall forest health, which affects how forests store carbon and support wildlife.

Researchers say the work could support management approaches that protect biodiversity and cultural heritage together rather than as separate priorities.
