“$1,500 for one small package, and I still don’t have it”

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A Belizean small business owner has laid out something a lot of people will recognise.

They ordered one essential item for their business more than two months ago and shipped it down with a freight company. It has still not arrived. The business has been offline since.

The costs stacked up in stages.

First, $400 to the freight company. Their usual charge for the smallest package has never exceeded $50. That $400 did not get them the item. It got them the receipt so they could try to retrieve it from the port themselves.

Now customs wants $910. A broker wants nearly $200 more.

That is close to $1,500 for one small package, and the owner says they simply do not have it.

“I feel like small businesses are constantly being squeezed, especially when it comes to importing the things we need to operate,” they wrote.

The post ends with a request rather than a complaint. They want to hear from other business owners who have dealt with importing and customs, in case there is a better route they do not know about.
